Will there be elections in Ukraine during the war: Zelensky made a statement
19 November 2024 14:07
During his speech in the Verkhovna Rada, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that elections will be held after a just peace is achieved. This became known from the broadcast of the presentation of the Internal Resilience Plan of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“The law does not allow holding elections in wartime. Ukraine first needs a just peace, and then it will hold fair elections,” Zelensky said.
He noted that no one among Ukraine’s partners has ever demanded that Ukraine hold presidential elections.
“But we, in Ukraine, have some people who are so hungry for power that want a struggle within our state more than for the sake of the state. They want political disputes in the trenches, like in TV studios…” he added.
The President noted that it was disastrous for our country.
According to the President, first of all, Ukraine needs a just peace. After that, Ukrainians will hold presidential elections.
“You need to be able to put the common interest above any personal desires,” Zelensky said.
As reported by The Economist, elections in Ukraine may be held as early as 2025. The earliest date is May 25.
Elections in Ukraine
Ukraine’s elections were supposed to be held in March 2024, but as martial law was imposed across the country, the vote was postponed indefinitely.
There were many discussions about the likelihood of the elections taking place. At the time, the authorities emphasized that it was impossible to hold elections, including because hundreds of thousands of citizens were at the front and could not vote.
However, in September 2024, it became known that the Central Election Commission had resumed the work of the State Voter Register in terms of recording permanent polling stations. The CEC then explained that this is a regular planned work that is carried out on a regular basis, and this does not mean that elections will be held in the near future.
