Denmark wants to introduce new rules at a time when governments across Europe are trying to more strictly regulate children’s access to phones and social networks.
The Danish Commission on Wellbeing, established by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in 2023, recently published a report that said children and young people lack a balance between digital and real life. The report makes 35 recommendations on how to improve the situation. One of them is to ban smartphones in schools and extracurricular clubs by law.
Matthias Tesfaye, Minister of Children and Education, said that “schools should be restored as an educational space where there is room for reflection, not as an extension of the teenage bedroom.” According to him, smartphones have no place in school, “neither during breaks nor during lessons.” Local authorities will be able to make exceptions to the ban, including for children with special educational needs.
The government is already preparing legislative changes.
