MP and deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Housing and Communal Services Oleksiy Kucherenko said in an interview that after the war ends, the process of housing confiscation from citizens due to utility debts may intensify in Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Kucherenko emphasized that the majority of Ukrainians are faced with a choice: to pay for utilities or basic needs. They do not have a clear vision of how to deal with the situation with accumulated debts.

“They do not know what to do with this debt. They say: “We just live. We just have to get through from day to day,” Kucherenko said.

The parliamentarian also emphasized that often elderly people are left with debts alone, especially if they have no relatives who could help with restructuring or payment.

The MP emphasized that although there is currently no forced seizure of housing due to debts, such processes may intensify after the war.

Kucherenko warned that if the libertarian policy in the economy and private property is strengthened, the situation with housing foreclosures will become even more acute.

“I’m just convinced of this – they will start taking away these apartments,” he added.

Kucherenko also drew attention to intergenerational responsibility for inherited property. According to him, there is hope that children or grandchildren will help to deal with the debts.

It should be noted that the law still provides for the possibility of foreclosure on the property of a debtor who has not taken measures to restructure or repay debts.
