By the end of September, hunger in Gaza will turn into famine – UN

8 September 2025 09:43

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are suffering from catastrophic hunger, and the food security situation is rapidly deteriorating amid a new Israeli offensive on Gaza City. According to international monitoring organizations, virtually the entire population of the enclave’s largest urbanized center is already experiencing acute food shortages, and many areas are on the verge of full-blown famine. The UN said that there is a “narrow window” to prevent further spread of hunger in Gaza, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Reuters.

Israel does not stop the attacks

In these circumstances, the Israeli armed forces are preparing for a large-scale assault on the central part of Gaza City, warning civilians to evacuate from tall buildings. The Israeli command claims that these buildings are used by Hamas militants, although no evidence has been provided. Hamas itself categorically denies these allegations.

Over the past 24 hours, 14 civilians were killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza City, according to local medics. Among the attacked objects is a school in the south of the city, which provided shelter for displaced persons. The Israeli army claims to have warned of the strike in advance.

Humanitarian catastrophe

The UN Chief Humanitarian Coordinator Tom Fletcher expressed serious concern about the rapid deterioration of the situation. According to him, the international community has only a “narrow window of opportunity” – until the end of September – to prevent the spread of hunger to other regions of the Gaza Strip, in particular to central Deir al-Balah and southern Khan Younis.

The UN representative called on Israel to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territories. International organizations insist that the current amount of aid is absolutely insufficient to save civilian lives.

COGAT, the Israeli defense agency responsible for humanitarian affairs, reported the delivery of more than 1,900 trucks of aid, mostly food, last week. However, international observers consider these figures insufficient to meet the critical needs of Gaza’s two million people.

Thousands of Palestinians remain blockaded in Gaza City, despite calls from Israeli commanders to leave the territory. Many of them simply have nowhere else to go – there are already overcrowded refugee camps in the southern areas, including Khan Younis, in difficult conditions along the coast.

The war continues

Dissatisfaction with the duration of the military campaign is growing among Israeli society. On Saturday evening, tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets with the families of the hostages, demanding an end to the war. Of the 48 hostages still held in Gaza, only 20 are believed to be alive.

During his visit to Jerusalem, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lekke Rasmussen called on Israel to “change course” and end the military campaign.

The current conflict began after an unexpected attack by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023, which killed 1200 Israelis and took 251 others hostage. According to Palestinian sources, Israel killed more than 64,000 Gazans in response. The war has been going on for almost a year now, turning the densely populated enclave into ruins.

The international community continues to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict, but the positions of the parties remain irreconcilable. Hamas demands a complete ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops, while Israel insists on destroying the group’s military capabilities and unconditionally releasing hostages.
