Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, has left parliament and resigned from all public office after being accused of recruiting 17 fellow citizens to participate in the war in Ukraine on the side of Russia. This was announced by her party Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Reuters.
Zuma-Sambudla represented the opposition MK party in the National Assembly, headed by her father. The party emphasized that the decision to resign was made voluntarily, and the resignation takes effect immediately.
MK national organizer Nathi Nhleko told reporters that the party had nothing to do with the men being sent to Russia, and Zuma-Sambudla’s resignation should not be taken as an admission of guilt. According to him, the MC intends to support the families of the victims.
“National officials have accepted Comrade Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s decision to resign and support her efforts to ensure the safe return of these young South Africans to their families,” he said.
Zuma-Sambudla attended the press conference, but did not make any statements and did not publicly respond to the accusations.
Earlier, the South African government reported that 17 South Africans were in the Ukrainian Donbas, where, according to the authorities, they were lured by false promises of lucrative contracts. The authorities stated that they are working to bring them home and are investigating the circumstances of their entry into the war zone.
On Sunday, November 23, the police announced the start of an investigation into Zuma-Sambudla, following an official appeal by her half-sister, who accused her and two other people of involvement in sending men to war and demanded that a criminal investigation be initiated.
