“No aid will be provided” – Slovakia suspends electricity supplies to Ukraine

Slovakia is suspending emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. This statement was made by the country’s Prime Minister Robert Fico on Facebook, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
“Starting today, if Ukraine asks Slovakia for help in stabilizing its energy grid, it won’t get it,” Fico said.
He calls the decision a response to the suspension of Russian oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline. It will take effect on February 23.
According to him, this is the first step in response, to which “the Slovak government has the right.” Fico claims that this does not contradict the country’s international obligations.
The Slovak prime minister said that this step will be canceled after the resumption of oil transit to Slovakia.
Fico also added that in January 2026 alone, these emergency supplies, which were needed to stabilize the Ukrainian power grid, were twice as high as in the whole of 2025. Kyiv has not yet commented on this data.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy previously stated that January saw a record volume of electricity imports from the EU to Ukraine – 41.987 GWh. However, it did not specify how much was imported from Slovakia in particular.
In addition, Fico noted that the country could go further, in particular, by reconsidering its support for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union:
“If the Ukrainian side continues to harm Slovakia’s interests in the supply of strategic raw materials, the Slovak government will also reconsider its previous constructive position on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and prepare further measures.”
On February 21, Fico announced that he would initiate the suspension of emergency energy assistance to Ukraine if oil supplies through Druzhba were not resumed.
The transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia was suspended as a result of Russia’s attack on January 27.
