It will help the power system: Ukraine decommissioned a power unit at a nuclear power plant

At present, electricity consumption limits for industrial and residential consumers in all regions of Ukraine are not expected to be applied. This is due to the completion of repairs at one of the thousand-megawatt nuclear power units. This was reported by Ukrenergo, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“The spring and summer repair campaign at nuclear power plants to ensure stable operation of nuclear units during the heating season continues. This may occasionally cause a shortage of electricity in the power system,”
– the statement said.
The Ministry of Energy reported that the scheduled repair of the unit was completed three days ahead of schedule. When it reaches full capacity, it will add 1,000 MW to the power system.
“This is the second nuclear power unit where nuclear engineers have carried out the necessary repairs this year. Several more units are currently being prepared for scheduled outages. This is critical to ensure stable and uninterrupted operation of all 9 nuclear units during the heating season,”
– the Ministry of Energy noted.
Yesterday, on 27 May, at the request of the Polish power system operator, Ukraine received surplus electricity from Poland from 13:00 to 17:00.
During the day, it also received electricity from Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Moldova. The total volume was 17,207 MWh, with a maximum capacity of up to 1,700 MW in some hours.
The reason for the restrictions
Russian troops have repeatedly attacked energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine this spring. In particular, at night and in the morning of 8 May, according to the Ministry of Energy, Russian forces attacked electricity generation and transmission facilities in six regions – Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia.
Due to the power shortage, Ukrenergo then imposed restrictions on power supply for industry and business, but also warned that blackouts for household consumers were possible.
The reason for the restrictions is an increase in electricity consumption during the cold snap. The capacity of Ukrainian power plants is insufficient due to the effects of five missile and drone attacks by Russia on the Ukrainian power grid since 22 March.
