Drone Fever in Kyiv: Why Ukraine Is Leading the World in Countering UAVs
13 March 13:20
There has been an unusual buzz in Kyiv in recent days. According to public figure and former Member of Parliament Ihor Lutsenko, foreigners interested in Ukrainian drone technology and counter-drone systems are flocking to the city.
“There’s a huge buzz in Kyiv; hotels are packed with foreigners who are urgently interested in our drone defense capabilities. It’s like a gold rush.”
In his view, the interest in Ukrainian developments did not arise by chance. Over the years of full-scale war, the country has effectively become a laboratory for modern technological warfare.
“Never before, since the days of Kievan Rus’, have we had such an opportunity to influence global processes. Never before, since the days of Sagaidachny, has the Ukrainian military been so strong.”
War experience found nowhere else
Lutsenko believes that it was precisely the massive drone attacks that forced Ukraine to create countermeasures that did not exist before.
“Three and a half years of suicide drone terror have, after all, forced us to develop immunity.”
According to him, this is not just about technology, but also about comprehensive experience:
- the operation of radars and detection systems
- the use of interceptor drones
- the integration of various elements into a single defense system.
“This includes experience with radars, interceptor drones, and unique solutions for integrating these elements into a single system. The Russians don’t have any of this—which means, all the more so, that nowhere else in the world does.”
A world seeking protection
According to Lutsenko, global interest in Ukrainian solutions has intensified due to new risks in the Middle East.
“Thanks to the war between Israel and the U.S. against Iran, the whole world has become convinced of the need for anti-drone immunity.”
He notes that the threat of strike drones to countries in the region has existed for several years, but effective countermeasures have not yet been developed there.
“Arab countries have not even come close to mounting an adequate response. And now they are turning to us for help. To us, in Kyiv.”
Whose achievement is this?
At the same time, Lutsenko questions the state’s role in shaping these technological solutions.
“Did the state lift a finger to ensure that such unprecedented technological solutions appeared in Ukraine? It’s a question whose answer remains up in the air.”
According to him, Ukrainian bureaucracy often reacts too slowly to technological changes.
“Too late, too little—that’s the motto of our officials.”
Despite this, certain government decisions have nevertheless helped the industry’s development—specifically, the procurement of radars, government orders for drones, and grant programs for technological projects.
The Role of the Front Lines
The main breakthrough, according to Lutsenko, was made not by officials, but by military personnel and engineers directly on the front lines.
“The main credit goes to field commanders and frontline troops.”
It was they, he said, who experimented and implemented new solutions, often against the inertia of the military system.
“They dismantled, designed, and experimented.”
The Price of Technological Breakthroughs
At the same time, Lutsenko emphasizes that technological achievements come at a very high price.
“Our high position in the global rankings has cost us a lot of blood.”
He adds that many people who began fighting Russian aggression back in 2014 have already died.
“Half of my friends, with whom we began this struggle in 2014, are already in the afterlife.”
The Beginning of a New Era
Despite the losses, Lutsenko is convinced that the current stage is only the beginning of a major transformation.
“What we are seeing now is just the dawn of a new era.”
He is referring to the development of robotic systems that are gradually changing the nature of modern warfare.
“The era of robotic systems is just beginning. Soon, the world will discover new dimensions of Ukrainian innovation in this field.”
