Remote mining from drones: Sumy region warns of a new threat

26 January 14:17

Russian troops continue to use tactics of remote mining of territories along the Ukrainian border, in particular using drones. This was reported by the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleg Grigorov, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What is known

According to him, explosive devices are dropped from drones in small light-colored bags. Such devices can be triggered by pressure or even by a person’s approach, which significantly increases the risk to the civilian population.

In this regard, the authorities are urging residents of the Sumy region to be especially careful when traveling on roads, especially near border settlements.

What is remote mining and why is it dangerous?

Remote mining is a tactic in which explosive devices are scattered without the direct presence of troops, most often using drones or artillery.

Unlike traditional minefields, such devices:

  • are not marked with any warning signs;
  • can appear on roads, roadsides, in yards, and on paths;
  • often look like everyday or “harmless” objects.

This makes them difficult to detect and particularly dangerous to civilians.

What to do if you find a suspicious object

The regional military administration and law enforcement agencies remind you of the basic safety rules:

  • do not approach suspicious objects;
  • donot touch or try to move them;
  • immediately notify the police by calling 102;
  • warn other people nearby not to approach the dangerous area.
