€90 billion for Ukraine: the EU has made an important statement
20 March 05:51
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union will find a way to provide Ukraine with €90 billion in financial aid, even if certain countries block the decision. She made this announcement following a meeting of the European Council, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The EU is looking for a way to provide Ukraine with funding
According to the head of the European Commission, the decision to allocate funds was made back in December, but the process is being delayed due to the stance of certain political leaders.
Von der Leyen emphasized:
“The decision was adopted by the European Council in December. On the condition that three countries would not participate in this loan. This condition has been met. The loan remains blocked because one leader is not keeping his word, but let me repeat what I already said in Kyiv: we will provide this support one way or another.”
Why did problems arise with the loan?
According to European media reports, the main obstacle to implementing the aid package was the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who opposed the funding.
At the same time, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed unexpected support for the Hungarian position, stating that she understood Budapest’s arguments.
What does this statement mean for Ukraine
Von der Leyen’s statement indicates that the European Union is considering alternative mechanisms for financing Ukraine, even if not all countries support the decision.
These include possible:
- separate financial mechanisms without the participation of individual states
- alternative loan programs
- new forms of support through EU institutions.
The EU has previously used similar mechanisms to circumvent political deadlocks.
The EU’s Position on Supporting Ukraine
European leaders have repeatedly stated that financial support for Ukraine is a strategic issue for European security.
Von der Leyen’s statement effectively confirms that even political disputes within the EU will not stop aid to Ukraine.
