An economist estimates how much an Easter basket will cost in 2026

The price of an Easter basket rises every year due to inflation, but its actual cost varies for each family. It all depends on how much people are willing to spend on the holiday and how many items they plan to buy. Economist Andriy Novak discussed this in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

“The cost of any basket—whether for everyday use or for a holiday—is exactly the amount you can allocate to it. If it’s a thousand hryvnias, you’ll choose products to fit within that thousand. If it’s two thousand, you’ll select a set that fits that budget,” he explained.

The economist emphasizes: traditional calculations of the cost of an Easter basket are more of a conventional economic indicator that shows general trends in price increases but does not reflect the actual expenses of each family.

“All these calculations—such as the cost of an Easter basket, a New Year’s table, or a borscht set—are needed more for statistical purposes. People still base their decisions on their financial capabilities and decide what to buy a little more of and what to buy less of,” Novak noted.

According to him, the scale of the celebration also affects the final cost. After all, one family prepares a festive meal for two people, while another does so for a large family or guests.

“There’s no need to beat yourself up over the fact that the Easter basket is getting more expensive. This is natural, because inflation is a constant. But you can always adjust the selection of products or their quantity—it all depends on your budget and plans for the celebration,” the economist concluded.
