Former Energy Minister on Trypillia TPP: the situation is very critical

Russia continues to destroy the Ukrainian energy sector, and the situation is extremely critical at the moment. Former Energy Minister and Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Energy Assembly Ivan Plachkov said this in a commentary to Komersant ukrainskyi 
As reported, on the night of 11 April, the Russian military attacked energy infrastructure facilities in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa regions with drones and missiles.
The massive nighttime Russian attack completely destroyed the Trypillia thermal power plant in Kyiv region.
As of now, Centrenergo has lost 100% of its generation.
“This is a critical situation, as the destruction of the Ukrainian energy sector continues, not only in the electricity sector, but also in the gas transport sector. The equipment at thermal power plants and substations has been destroyed again,”
– plachkov said.
The former Energy Minister noted that the situation is very critical.
“Unfortunately, there are not many alternatives, such as diesel generators, restoration of destroyed equipment, and this requires funds – very large funding. We need money to restore and keep the power system from blackout,”
– plachkov summed up.
What we know about Trypillia TPP
Trypillia TPP is the most powerful power plant in the Kyiv region. It is the largest electricity supplier to Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions.
The plant is located 45 kilometres from Kyiv near the historic Ukrainian settlement of Trypillia, from which it takes its name.
The plant covers an area of 281.3 hectares. The TPP is located in Ukrainka, Obukhiv district, on the banks of the Kaniv reservoir.
Construction of Trypillia TPP began in 1967. In 1969, the first power unit was put into commercial operation. Three years later, the plant’s last (sixth) power unit was commissioned.
The territory of Trypillia TPP includes power generating facilities with a total capacity of 3,200 MW, of which the installed capacity of Trypillia TPP is about 57%
The main assets of Trypillia TPP are 4 pulverised coal and 2 gas-oil units with a capacity of 300 MW each. Six turbines and generators with a total rated capacity of 1800 MW.
The plant is connected to the gas transmission system of Ukraine.
The TPP has been constantly working on the use of secondary raw materials – ash and slag – for the needs of the national economy for road filling and construction materials.
Trypillia TPP has proved to be one of the most reliable and cost-effective power plants in Ukraine.
on 11 April 2024, the plant caught fire as a result of massive Russian shelling with Shaheds and Dagger missiles. As of 7 am, the fire continued. Subsequently, Centrenergo officially announced the damage and destruction of the thermal power plant.
