The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Monitoring Mission continues its work in Ukraine. IAEA experts are assessing the consequences of Russian attacks on key substations of NPC Ukrenergo. In particular, on the facilities that provide power output and power for the own needs of nuclear power plants, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to Ukrenergo.
“Cynical Russian attacks aimed at the infrastructure of the electricity transmission system, which ensures the stable operation of nuclear power plants, create risks of a nuclear disaster in the center of Europe. Recording the consequences of these Russian strikes is the goal of the IAEA observation mission. The world must see and understand what the Russian energy terror policy can lead to. Our cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency is aimed at ensuring a tough response of the international community to each case of barbaric drone strikes that endanger dozens of states. We hope that the mission will give a principled assessment of the facts recorded in the framework of the monitoring,” said Vitalii Zaichenko, Chairman of the Management Board of NPC Ukrenergo.
In addition to the consequences of the attacks, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s monitoring mission is also familiarizing itself with the state of restoration of Ukrenergo substations after previous Russian attacks and the arrangement of protection for key transmission system equipment.
Last year, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi agreed to expand the mandate of the observation mission in Ukraine. The Agency’s inspectors should monitor the safety situation both directly at Ukrainian nuclear power plants (including the temporarily occupied ZNPP) and at key transmission system facilities that directly affect the safety of Ukrainian NPPs.
