Ukrainian currant exports in 2025: decline in volumes and change in sales markets

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, Ukrainian currant exports in 2025 showed a significant decline, especially in the frozen products segment, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to EastFruit.

Currants are not traditionally an export-oriented berry for Ukraine, so the volume of its foreign supplies is determined on a residual basis, depending on the harvest and the availability of surplus products.

According to data from the Ukrainian Berry Growers Association published in an analytical report on foreign trade in berries in Ukraine, in 2025, unfavorable weather conditions led to a decline in currant production, which directly affected export volumes in both the fresh and frozen segments.

In particular, there was a noticeable drop in supplies to the Polish market, which has historically been key for Ukrainian exporters. At the same time, exports to Moldova remained economically viable, which made it possible not only to maintain volumes but also to record a slight increase.

Exports of frozen currants fell by almost five times compared to the same period in 2024, although in absolute terms this difference is not critical.

Most of the frozen currants produced were sold on the domestic market. Among foreign buyers, the main ones remain Bulgaria (31%), Italy (15%), Poland (15%), and Germany (15%), which form the basic demand for Ukrainian frozen berries.

Imports of frozen products remain low, mainly serving to compensate for shortages in Ukrainian supply schedules with Polish resources.
