Exports of Ukrainian sweets increased by 30%: top 5 buyer countries

In 2023, Ukraine exported 89,000 tonnes of bakery confectionery products, up 29% from 2022. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Ukrainian Agricultural Export Association.

According to the State Customs Service, last year Ukraine exported 89 thousand tonnes of bakery confectionery, up 29% compared to 2022, bringing in total revenues of $213 million (40%). Like other confectionery product groups, bakery sweets in 2023 showed an increase in exports after 2022.

In the geography of sales of domestically produced bakery sweets in 2023, the main consumer was the European Union, with total purchases from its countries amounting to $122 million or 57% of the total value.

The main buyers of bakery sweets from Ukraine last year were:

  • Romania – 14 thousand tonnes;
  • Poland – 14 thousand tonnes;
  • Moldova – 10 thousand tonnes;
  • Latvia – 5 thousand tonnes;
  • Germany – 5 thousand tonnes;
  • Georgia – 4 thousand tonnes;
  • Lithuania – 4 thousand tonnes;
  • Bulgaria – 3 thousand tonnes;
  • Azerbaijan – 3 thousand tonnes.

Quite significant deliveries were also made to the United States, Turkey, Israel, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, China, the UAE, and Libya.

Thus, Ukraine at least manages to maintain its position within the 30th place in the global ranking of exporters of this group of sweets.

The commodity structure of flour confectionery exports last year consisted mainly of sweet dry biscuits (32 thousand tonnes), waffles (31 thousand tonnes), crackers and croutons (6 thousand tonnes), gingerbread (4 thousand tonnes), and dry biscuits (3 thousand tonnes).

In 2024, our bakery sweets sales abroad are growing in volume and value: in January-March, exports reached approximately 25 thousand tonnes, up by one third compared to the first three months of 2023, with a value of almost USD 62 million (43%).

Romania, Poland, and Moldova remain the largest buyers in this segment, accounting for more than a third of foreign exchange earnings for Ukrainian specialised companies.
