Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy may end up back in prison. This was reported by BFMTV, citing sources, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Sarkozy’s defense team requested that two sentences in different criminal cases be combined. The former head of state asked that his sentence in the corruption and influence peddling case be counted toward his sentence in the case of exceeding election spending limits. However, the court disagreed with Sarkozy’s lawyers and rejected their request.

What is known about the cases

The Bismuth case is related to a corruption investigation. The investigation found that Sarkozy used a secret phone registered under the name “Paul Bismuth” to obtain confidential information from a judge through his lawyer.

The Bygmalion case concerns the illegal financing of Sarkozy’s 2012 presidential campaign. According to the investigation, the campaign’s expenses significantly exceeded the legal limit, and part of the expenses were concealed through fictitious accounts set up through the PR agency Bygmalion.

As a result , the politician was found guilty of violating election campaign financing rules.

New trial

At the same time, Sarkozy will appear in court again on March 16. This is an appeal process in the case of the alleged financing of his 2007 presidential campaign by Libya.

Recall that in November last year, a Paris court ruled to release Sarkozy from prison early, replacing his imprisonment with “judicial supervision” pending his appeal.

As reported, on September 25, 2025, a Paris court sentenced Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison, one of which was suspended. This was the first time in modern French history that a former head of state had been sent to prison.
