Former Foreign Ministry spokesman becomes Consul General in Toronto: what is known about Nikolenko

Former spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko has been appointed Consul General of Ukraine in Toronto, Canada. Nikolenko announced this on Facebook, Kommersant Ukrainian reports

“A new chapter. New responsibility. New opportunities to promote the interests of Ukraine and Ukrainians and bring the Victory closer,”

– nikolenko wrote.

The diplomat also thanked Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy for their trust.

What is known about Nikolenko

Oleg Nikolenko was born on 19 August 1986 in Kherson.

In 2008, he graduated from the Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a master’s degree in English and Arabic translation with honours.

In 2011, he graduated from the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and became an international lawyer.

His professional diplomatic career began in 2008, when he was selected as an attaché to the Ukrainian Embassy in Libya.

After returning from Libya, he worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in charge of North Africa and the Middle East, and was an assistant to the Special Representative of Ukraine for the Middle East and Africa.

In 2015-2020 , he was the Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations in New York.

In 2019-2020, he served as Vice-Chair of the UN Committee on Information.

Since 22 November 2020, he has been the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. on 8 March, Nikolenko announced that he was leaving his post as spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nikolenko noted that he would start a new diplomatic chapter and would continue to work as fruitfully as possible “for the benefit of the interests of our state.”
