Extreme spring: 18 degrees below zero recorded in Ukraine
7 April 11:11
Despite the calendar spring, Ukraine is experiencing an extreme cold snap. On Mount Pip Ivan in the Carpathians, the air temperature dropped to -18°C. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
on April 7, 2025, rescuers reported extreme weather conditions on the Chornohora ridge, in particular on the top of Pip Ivan. In addition to 18-degree frost, there is
- Thick fog
- Intense snowfall
- Strong wind (up to 7 m/s)
- Low visibility
These conditions pose a serious danger to tourists and rescue services working in the mountains.
Why is it dangerous?
Even experienced hikers can get lost due to limited visibility. Temperatures below -15°C increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, especially without the right equipment. Avalanches are also possible due to snowfall and wind.
SES warns: refrain from hiking in the mountains
Rescuers are urging people to refrain from hiking in the Carpathians, especially in the Chornohora range, until the weather conditions stabilize.
“Due to the frost and low visibility, staying in the mountains poses a serious danger. We urge you to refrain from hiking until the weather conditions improve,” the SES said.

It should be noted that the weather in Ukraine is expected to be abnormally cold during the week of April 7-13. Unstable conditions will be in all regions. Periodic precipitation in the form of rain and snow is expected. In addition, winds may increase to 15-20 m/s.
On Tuesday, April 8, light snow or sleet is forecast in the western, northern and some central regions.
