An energy blow to Sloviansk: The thermal power plant in Mykolaivka has ceased operations

7 April 21:58

On April 6, following Russian attacks, the Slavyansk Thermal Power Plant ceased operations. The plant is located in the town of Mykolaivka near Slavyansk, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

DTEK announced the shutdown and expressed support for the employees of the energy companyDonbasenergo, which owns the plant.

Reaction from energy workers

DTEK noted that they fully understand the emotions of the plant’s employees, as they themselves have experienced a similar situation.

“We know all too well how painful it is when a beloved enterprise shuts down. After all, two years ago we said goodbye to our Kurakhivska TPP in the same way. But the most important thing is to keep people safe,” the company stated.

Threats to employees

The region’s energy infrastructure is regularly targeted by attacks.

On February 17, three employees of the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant were killed after a Russian drone attacked their vehicle.

Security situation in Sloviansk

In recent months, the city of Sloviansk has regularly suffered strikes on its infrastructure.

Among the latest developments:

  • in March, the city began dismantling the trolleybus overhead contact line to install anti-drone nets;
  • Trolleybuses are being temporarily removed from the city;
  • at the end of March, Russian troops struck the railway infrastructure.

The Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant is one of the key energy facilities in northern Donetsk Oblast.
