on December 25, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine extended the license to operate Unit 2 of the South Ukrainian NPP until December 2035.
This was reported by Energoatom, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
SNRIU Chairman Oleh Korikov handed over the relevant permits to Acting Chairman of the Board of Energoatom2 Pavlo Kovtoniuk, the report says.
“Based on the results of the state nuclear and radiation safety review, the SNRIU Board recognized the possibility of safe operation of the power unit as justified,” Energoatom said.
“This decision is an important element of Energoatom’s long-term strategy for the preservation and development of nuclear generation capacities in Ukraine,” said the head of NNEGC.
Vyacheslav Stoyanov, Director General of the South Ukrainian NPP, noted that the nuclear power plant took into account the existing experience when performing the work required to obtain a license for Unit 2.
“This made it possible to avoid a long shutdown of the power unit and not to reduce electricity production, which is especially important in the current environment,” the statement said.
In November 2023, Energoatom received a license to extend the lifetime of South Ukrainian NPP Unit 1. In total, it will operate for 50 years.
For the first time, the company’s specialists performed this procedure in accordance with international standards without shutting down the unit for 200-250 days, as it used to be.
