EU and US prepare synchronized sanctions against russia: what will be in the package

The European Union and the United States are preparing a powerful coordinated package of sanctions against russia in case the Kremlin officially rejects the proposed cease-fire scheme. This issue is becoming one of the key elements of a new transatlantic containment strategy aimed not only at economically but also diplomatically isolating russia, "Komersant Ukrainian" reported citing Le Figaro.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, after meetings with U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stressed that the EU is ready to synchronize the 17th package of sanctions with similar measures of Washington. It is about coordinating the content of the restrictions and their calendar implementation. Barro bluntly stated that:
“Putin is the only obstacle to peace, and Kiev has fulfilled its part of the agreements.”
The US side, represented by Senator Graham, is pushing a “crushing sanctions” bill that has already been supported by 72 senators. Among the key provisions: 500% duties on imports from countries that buy Russian energy resources, and a complete ban on the purchase of Russian government debt by US citizens. This could hurt countries that are still trying to maintain neutrality or balance, in particular China, India, and Turkey.
European countries are now developing additional tools to control dual-use goods that may enter Russia through intermediary chains in Central Asia and the Caucasus. There are plans to expand the sanctions lists of individuals and legal entities involved in circumventing restrictions.
The key task for Brussels and Washington is to demonstrate political cohesion and technical synchronization. Both sides recognize that sanctions will not have an immediate effect, but they create long-term pressure on the Russian economy, financial system and military-industrial complex.
The final parameters of the sanctions package are expected to be approved in June, after which they will be tied to specific actions by the Kremlin. If Moscow escalates the sanctions package in a demonstrative manner – for example, through new mobilization or attacks on critical infrastructure – the package could be expanded on an emergency basis.
