Prime Minister Krysten Michal said that the government considers the incident “absolutely unacceptable.” According to him, the appeal to the allies is aimed at discussing the security situation and coordinating further actions.

“The Estonian government has decided to request consultations with NATO under Article 4,” Michal wrote on social media.

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Charge d’Affaires and handed him a note of protest over the border violation.

The EU also responded to the incident. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on EU leaders to agree on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia as soon as possible.

Poland also recalled that on September 10, NATO had already used the Article 4 mechanism because of the invasion of its territory by Russian drones. According to government spokesman Adam Szlapka, the situation in the region requires maximum vigilance by the allies.

According to Article 4 of the Washington Treaty, NATO member states can convene consultations if they feel their territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened.
