The decision of the EU ambassadors means that on 25 June, as planned, an intergovernmental conference will be held to officially launch negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to the EU.

The end of June has long been the expected date for the intergovernmental conference, as Belgium’s presidency of the EU Council ends this month.

As a reminder, on 7 June, Hungary blocked the decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession at the level of permanent representatives. If it had not changed its position, the opening of negotiations could have been delayed until the second half of 2024, when Hungary holds the EU Council presidency.
