Galushchenko: Private nuclear power plants may appear in Ukraine

Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko has announced the possibility of private nuclear power plants in the country. To do this, he said, it is necessary to adopt appropriate legislation. This is reported by Interfax-Ukraine, [ komersant] reports.

“There are many private nuclear power plants in the world. There are companies with private capital, and we have to implement a similar approach in Ukraine,” the minister said during a panel discussion at the URC-2025 conference in Rome.

Galushchenko acknowledged that the adoption of such a law is a politically sensitive issue, but expressed confidence that it will be done.

The minister also emphasized that Ukraine should develop all types of generation in a complex, without opposing nuclear energy to renewable sources or gas generation. According to him, the implementation of nuclear projects requires considerable time, so the potential of other energy sources should be increased in parallel.

“While the construction of one nuclear power unit is underway, we can develop renewable energy. But we critically need base-load generation – without it, the power system will not survive,” explained Galushchenko.

He emphasized that industrial consumers are the ones who need a reliable source of electricity the most.
