Security guarantees for Ukraine: Zelensky announces finalization of agreements with Trump

The document on security guarantees for Ukraine from the US is ready to be finalized with US President Donald Trump.

This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, January 8, after a report by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov on the results of negotiations in Paris, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“A bilateral document on security guarantees for Ukraine is essentially ready for finalization at the highest level with the President of the United States. It is important that Ukraine continues to unite the work of the European and American teams, and together we discussed, in particular, documents on recovery and economic development. Complex issues related to the basic framework for ending the war were also discussed, and the Ukrainian side presented possible options for finalizing this document,” Zelensky wrote on social media.

Now Ukraine is waiting for feedback from the Russian side on whether Moscow is really ready to end the war, he stressed.

In addition, Ukraine is informing its partners about the consequences of Russian strikes, which, as Zelensky noted, do not indicate that Moscow is revising its priorities.

“In this context, it is necessary that pressure on Russia increases as intensively as the negotiating teams are working. The realism of future security guarantees must be proven by the ability of partners at this stage to exert effective pressure on the aggressor. We are preparing new relevant contacts with partners,” the president said.

15-year guarantees: what the US is offering and what Ukraine wants

As Zelenskyy said at the end of December, the US is offering Ukraine security guarantees for 15 years with the possibility of extension.

At the same time, during a meeting with Trump in Florida, Zelensky asked for a longer term: “I told him that we have been at war for almost 15 years, so we would very much like the guarantees to be longer. And I told him that we would very much like to consider the possibility of 30, 40, 50 years. Then it would be a historic decision by President Trump.”

According to the Ukrainian president, Trump took a pause on this issue. Zelensky expects to meet with him in the near future.
