UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that at least 40,000 civilians, including women and children, have been confirmed dead during Russia’s large-scale aggression against Ukraine. More than 36,000 people have been injured. He announced this during a meeting of the Security Council in New York, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Guterres reminded that this February marked the third anniversary of the beginning of the great war. Despite the efforts of the international community and the resolution adopted by the General Assembly on the need for an early cessation of hostilities, Russia continues to carry out large-scale attacks.

“Ukrainian cities are undergoing a record number of missile and drone attacks. Hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure are being destroyed. This leads to constant civilian casualties,” the UN Secretary-General emphasized.

He also emphasized that attacks on civilian objects are a violation of international law and must be stopped immediately.

Separately, Guterres warned against Russia’s plans to organize an energy blackout in Ukraine on the eve of winter, as well as the danger of nuclear incidents at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

“The threat of using nuclear weapons remains real. All states must unite to ensure security and compliance with international humanitarian law,” he emphasized.
