Romanian Defense Minister resigns: what is the reason?

Romanian Defense Minister Ionuc Mosteanu announced his resignation after five months in office. The reason was false information in the politician’s resume about his training.

According to "Komersant Ukrainian", Romania Journal reports.

“Today I resigned as Minister of National Defense. I spoke with the president, prime minister, party chairman, and some colleagues from USR (the Union for the Salvation of Romania – ed.) and thank them for their support and trust. I take this decision with full responsibility and with respect for the Romanian army,” Mosteanu wrote on Facebook.

He emphasized that “Romania and Europe are under attack by Russia,” noting that his country’s security must be protected “at all costs.”

“I don’t want discussions about my education and the mistakes I made many years ago to distract those who are now running the country from their difficult task,” Mosteanu added.

Mosteanu’s statement was preceded by the disclosure of information about his education by Libertatea. According to the journalists, Mosteanu initially stated on his resume that he had studied at the Athenaeum University, although he had never actually studied at this institution.

The defense minister admitted his mistake and apologized for “not paying much attention to these details” when he wrote his resume 9 years ago.

“There was a mistake in my resume, which I hastily made in 2016 using an online template, which, I admit, embarrasses me. I did not pay much attention to these details at the time. I apologize for this,” Moscătănu wrote.

The politician’s resume also contains information about his incomplete education at the Faculty of Automation of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. Mosteanu told Digi24 that he suspended his studies to work, and in 2015 he completed his higher education, earning a master’s degree at the Faculty of Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Mosteanu’s first resume became public after he entered politics, holding public positions including advisor to the Minister of Transportation and board member of state-owned companies.
