Golubovska explains the danger of COVID-19 and its mutations

Olga Golubovska, Chief Infectious Disease Officer of Ukraine, spoke about the current situation with COVID-19. According to her, with the advent of the Omicron variant and its sub-variants, the number of deaths has decreased dramatically – by about 90%. But this does not mean that it should be taken lightly.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Olga Golubovskaya’s post on Facebook.

“With the advent of the Omicron variant and its sub-variants, the number of deaths has decreased dramatically – by about 90%. But this does not mean that it should be taken lightly, the main problem associated with Omicron sub-variants is the ability to decompensate for chronic pathology – hypertension, diabetes, rarely kidney disease, etc.; after clinical recovery, patients are forced to be hospitalized for this reason,” she wrote.

As emphasized by Golubovska, the current outbreak is characterized by the following features, including those related to strange treatment, to put it mildly:

– the disease is well tested by rapid tests, compared to the previous outbreak;

– quite often, especially with improper treatment or lack of it, a wave-like recurrent course develops, and secondary bacterial flora can join;

– improper treatment is when, for example, ineffective oseltamivir is used as antiviral therapy, and no treatment is when no antiviral therapy is used at all;

– body temperature at onset is not a criterion for severity;

– mefenamic acid does not cure the disease (it only mitigates symptoms, which is not always good in infectious pathology) and has nothing to do with antiviral therapy.

“The good news is that pharmacies finally have a drug with a specific effect – paxlovid. It should be taken, as well as any drugs aimed at inhibiting the replication of the pathogen, from the first hours of illness (the earlier the better). And then everything will be fine,” she summarized.
