Preparing for an abnormal winter: weather forecast from a weather forecaster
4 November 14:11
FORECAST
Autumn is coming to an end, so Ukrainians are waiting for winter forecasts – will there be a real snowy winter this year, or will we have another mild season with rain instead of snowdrifts? According to weather forecaster Natalia Golena in a commentary to "Komersant Ukrainian", preliminary calculations show that the coming winter in Ukraine is likely to be warm, with average temperatures above the climatic norm. This means that in many regions of the country, the air temperature may remain above freezing even during the traditionally cold months.
“So far, the calculations show that it will be a mostly warm winter, meaning that the average temperature of the winter months has a positive anomaly. That is, the temperature background will be higher than the climatic norm,” said Natalia Golenya.
However, the forecaster emphasizes that it is too early to talk about specific indicators, as the norms vary depending on the region and observation station.
So far, November has been pleasing Ukrainians with atypical warmth for this period – during the day the air warms up to 14…17 °C, while nights remain relatively mild.
“This week the weather will be warm for this time of year. We are now in the area of an atmospheric front, and in the near future the weather will be determined by a high pressure field. If there are clearings at night, the temperature will range from 0 to 6 degrees Celsius. And daytime highs will be in the range of 8-14, in the south of the country up to 16-17 degrees Celsius,” noted Natalia Golenya.
However, starting from the second decade of the month, a gradual cooling, mild frosts and rains are expected in the south of the country.
“There may be a cold snap starting next week, on the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, according to preliminary calculations. There are already preliminary estimates of a decrease in temperature. During the day, the maximum temperature will be from 0 to 5-6 degrees Celsius, and at night there will be mild frosts, from 0 to 5 degrees Celsius. This is just a rough estimate for now.
We will see how it will be next Monday. We can say that we will be approaching the November norm next week.
It will rain in the south of Ukraine next week, on November 10, 11, 12, so it will be mostly rain. After that, the temperature will drop almost immediately in dry weather. There will be an anticyclone again, but it will move from Scandinavia to Ukraine from the north, and we will have a high pressure field again,” the forecaster explained.
So, we are not looking forward to a harsh, but rather a mild and changeable winter, with frequent thaws and short periods of cold. This nature of the season is in line with the general climate warming trends that Ukraine is experiencing more and more.
