“Monetary reform”: fraudsters have invented a new scheme to deceive Ukrainians

22 July 04:01

Fraudsters have become more active again, this time hiding behind a fictitious “monetary reform.” The victims are most often elderly people. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the press service of the Kyiv Patrol Police.

Cases of fraud related to the fake “monetary reform” have been recorded in Ukraine again. According to law enforcement officials, criminals visit the homes of citizens, most often elderly people, and tell them that old banknotes need to be exchanged for new ones.

The scheme is simple: the fraudsters pose as employees of government agencies, such as banks, social services, or even the NBU. They convince the owners that the old money is allegedly being “withdrawn from circulation,” so it must be exchanged immediately. People give the criminals the cash and never see them again.

Such cases are not uncommon, especially in the regions and among the elderly, who trust “official” visits and do not use digital channels to verify information.

How to protect yourself and your family:

  • Don’t let strangers into your home – even if they have IDs.
  • Always consult with family or people you trust.
  • Warn your parents or grandparents about possible fraudulent schemes.
  • If you suspect anything, call the special line 112 or the police.
