Georgia criticizes Kyiv: what the speaker of the parliament accuses the Ukrainian authorities of
17 November 18:18
The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has spoken harshly about the Ukrainian government, accusing it of “ingratitude” toward the Georgian people. His statements came amid tense discussions between Kyiv and Tbilisi over support for Ukraine and Georgia’s European integration aspirations. This was reported by TV1, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Papuashvili emphasized that he wishes Ukraine peace and would like the Ukrainian people to be represented by a “decent government.” At the same time, he recalled his previous remarks to the Ukrainian side about “gratitude” and “appreciation,” alluding to the conflict between President Zelensky and Donald Trump in February this year.
Accusations of a “fifth column”
The Georgian politician said that the problems are not limited to individuals, but concern the “fifth column” in Georgia – a group of people who, according to him, conduct activities that benefit the external enemy and remain influential in the country’s political environment.
Papuashvili also criticized Ukraine for allegedly trying to involve Georgia in the escalation of the conflict with Russia, noting that the Georgian people are being responded to with incomplete or hidden information.
Papuashvili’s statements came amid controversy over Georgia’s European integration course. In early November, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili accused Ukraine of creating obstacles to Georgia’s accession to the EU. In response, Ukrainian Minister Andriy Sybiga said that the problems on the way to the country’s integration into the EU lie in Tbilisi, not in Kyiv.
International significance
This series of statements indicates an aggravation of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which are formally allies in countering Russian aggression. At the same time, Papuashvili emphasized that his criticism is not directed at the entire Ukrainian people, but at the country’s leadership, which, in his opinion, does not appreciate Georgia’s support enough.
