Elon Musk nominated for Nobel Prize for “defending freedom of speech”

The American billionaire and owner of the social network X, Elon Musk, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for defending freedom of speech and human rights. This statement was made by Branko Grims, a member of the European Parliament, who shared the news on his Facebook page, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
Grims explained that he nominated Musk for the award because of his unwavering commitment to the fundamental human right to freedom of public expression, as well as to peace.
He also expressed his gratitude to all the co-authors and “everyone who helped with this challenging project.”
In February 2024, Musk was nominated by Norwegian Marius Nielsen, but this application was unsuccessful.
At the same time, it is worth noting that in recent months, Elon Musk’s behavior, as well as changes in the social network X after its purchase, have caused some discontent among a number of international organizations and public figures. Many of them decided to leave the platform, which was the result of the controversial steps Musk took as its owner.
In particular, the German Ministry of Defense announced the suspension of its activities on X, accusing the platform of promoting the spread of disinformation. Earlier, more than 60 universities and research institutions from Germany and Austria announced their withdrawal from the social network after Musk met with the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, Alice Weidel, during which they discussed German government policies, particularly in the energy sector.
French civil society organizations also expressed dissatisfaction with Musk’s actions, with 87 of them announcing that they would stop using the X platform on January 20. They viewed his support for Donald Trump as a threat to freedom of speech and democratic values.
And in November 2024, the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, following the British newspaper The Guardian, decided to stop publishing on the social network. Among the reasons they cited were racism and conspiracy theories prevailing on the social network.
