The Skylight oil tanker flying the flag of Palau was attacked by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, Al Arabiya reports, citing the Oman Maritime Security Center, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The attack took place five nautical miles north of the Omani port of Khassab in the province of Musandam. All 20 crew members, including 15 Indian nationals and five Iranian nationals, were evacuated. Four crew members suffered injuries of varying severity and were taken ashore for medical treatment.

The Iranian Mehr agency published a video of the burning tanker with the comment: “The consequences for the tanker that was hit while attempting to illegally pass through the Strait of Hormuz and is now sinking.”

The day before, following the Israeli and US attack on Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps broadcast a signal on the VHF band prohibiting all ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a representative of the European Union’s naval mission.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil export route, connecting the Persian Gulf’s largest oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates, with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, as well as large volumes of liquefied natural gas, raising expectations of a sharp jump in prices.
