Spanish laboratory SCImago Lab names 10 best Ukrainian universities

The results of the international SCImago Institutions Rankings 2025 have been published, which includes almost 10,000 scientific and educational institutions, including more than 5,000 universities. This is reported on the website of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs.
This year, Ukraine was represented in the ranking prepared by the Spanish SCImago Lab, a record number of higher education institutions – 61 universities.
Which Ukrainian universities were recognized
The top ten Ukrainian universities according to the SCImago IR 2025 ranking are as follows:
Sumy State University,
Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv,
Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University,
Lviv Polytechnic National University,
National Technical University “Dnipro Polytechnic”,
Interregional Academy of Personnel Management,
Vadym Hetman Kyiv National Economic University,
State University of Zhytomyr Polytechnic,
Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University,
Ternopil National Medical University named after I. Gorbachevsky,
How this ranking is compiled
SCImago Institutions Rankings (SCImago IR) is a reputable international system for evaluating scientific and academic institutions, which since 2009 has been analyzing their activities in three key areas
– research effectiveness (50%)
– innovative developments (30%),
– social impact (20%).
The ranking methodology is based on data from the Scopus scientometric database and other authoritative sources. The evaluation takes into account:
– the impact of scientific publications,
– the level of international cooperation,
– open access to research,
– development of patent activity,
– technological contribution and digital presence of the university.
In 2024, three new indicators were added to the ranking methodology to reflect the social impact of higher education institutions:
– contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals – research and educational initiatives aimed at global development and addressing current challenges
– the level of women’s involvement in research processes – assessment of gender balance in the academic environment.
– the impact of research on public policy – the use of research results in decision-making at the national and international levels.
Osvita.ua also compiled a university ranking
To compile the consolidated ranking of higher education institutions of Ukraine, the educational information resource “Osvita.ua” used the data of the most authoritative national rankings of educational institutions of Ukraine among experts and the media:
– “Top 200 Ukraine”. The evaluation of Ukrainian universities in 2024 within this rating was based on 6 international and 4 national indicators. Among them, the largest weighting coefficients are academic, research and publishing activities, assessment of research achievements through comparison of university websites, achievements in terms of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and assessment of the impact of universities on society in four broad areas: research, outreach, management, and teaching.
– “Scopus. The results of the rating are based on the citation rates of scientific articles published by educational institutions or their specialists.
– “NMT Score for Contract”. This ranking of higher education institutions is based on the average score of the National Multisubject Test of applicants enrolled in universities in 2024 for study at the expense of individuals and legal entities (contract).
According to the results of the Consolidated Ranking 2024, the leader of higher education is Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, which has been at the top of the list of the country’s best universities for eight years in a row. This university is also a leader in the sub-rating of classical universities in Ukraine.
The second place in the ranking in 2024 was taken by the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
Lviv Polytechnic National University took the third place in the Consolidated Ranking in 2024. This institution is also recognized as the best technical university in the country.
The National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” is on the fourth place in the ranking.
The fifth place among the best higher education institutions in 2024 belongs to V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
The list of the best agricultural universities is headed by the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences.
Among pedagogical institutions, the best in the ranking is Ternopil Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University.
Bogomolets National Medical University was recognized as the best medical institution of higher education in Ukraine.
The Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts was recognized as the leader among artistic institutions in Ukraine.
Among private higher education institutions, the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management demonstrated the best results last year.
