Historical porridge for students: Ministry of Education comes under harsh criticism

14 August 2024 15:10

Ukrainians continue to criticise the Ministry of Education and Science for its decision to combine world history and the history of Ukraine into one subject. The public, educators and experts continue to express their dissatisfaction with this initiative, considering it harmful to the quality of historical education and understanding of global processes among young people. For example, journalist Vitaliy Gaidukevych said that the Ministry of Education and Science is creating a historical mess for students, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

“Several times I have tried to sit down to respond to the idiocy of the (regular) Ministry of Education and Science. But each time, there are only dots in the censorious…”, Gaidukevych writes.

He sharply criticises the innovation, calling it harmful to education and students. In particular, he questions how children will be able to learn about the history of Egypt, Greece, Rome, China or Japan in the context of the history of Ukraine.

“But they can’t. Instead of explaining the world to students with a convenient (if appropriate!) injection of “at this time on the territory of Ukraine” and vice versa – a contextual explanation of what was happening in the world at the time “when in Ukraine…”. children are fed historical porridge. This is some kind of national karma – pests, ignorant people and degraders in the Ministry of Education and Science,” he continues.

Gaidukevych is convinced that such a merger of subjects will lead to confusion in the minds of students and will not give them a full understanding of world history and its impact on the development of Ukraine.

As a reminder, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lisovyi recently announced that the Ministry of Education and Science had approved the Conceptual Framework for Reforming History Education in the General Secondary Education System. In the comments to this post, Ukrainians called Lisovyi the worst minister, an enemy of Ukraine and “worse than Tabachnyk”,

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine may soon get a new head. Kommersant UkrainianKomersant.Info has learned from its own sources that the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, may soon be dismissed.
