In Tuscany, Italy, up to 30 thousand euros are offered to those wishing to settle in one of the dozens of small towns in the region. In this way, local authorities want to prevent a decrease in the number of residents. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Business Insider.

The programme, called Residence in the Mountains, was launched in June as part of efforts to stabilise the region’s declining population. A general fund of €2,800,000 has been set up to pay those who decide to settle in rural areas of the region.

The fund will pay people grants of between €10,000 and €30,000 to enable them to move to Tuscany and renovate the rural house they will live in.

“The aim is to facilitate and encourage the repopulation and socio-economic revival of mountainous areas, acting as a counter to the marginalisation of these areas,”

– the organisers say.

The grant is to cover 50% of the cost of renovating a house in one of Tuscany’s 76 towns with a population of less than 5,000 inhabitants. Among them are the more or less well-known San Casciano dei Bagni, famous for its thermal pools; Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of the Renaissance artist of the same name; and the island of Capraia Isola.

The programme is open to Italians themselves, EU citizens, as well as third-country nationals who have a long-term residence permit in the EU for at least 10 years. Eligible applicants must commit to making a Tuscan property their primary home.

The application period for the programme ends on 27 July.
