How to prepare for a magnetic storm: Thursday will be the hardest for weather-sensitive people

26 August 10:32

Moderate solar activity is expected during the last week of summer, but a slight increase is likely on Thursday. This is evidenced by data from the NOAA Space Weather Forecast Center, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the official forecasts of U.S. meteorologists, the period until August 31 will be characterized by a predominantly stable geomagnetic situation. Serious disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere are not expected. Only on Thursday, August 28, a slight increase in the level of activity is expected.

Detailed schedule of solar activity for the rest of the week

  • august 26-27 (Tuesday-Wednesday) – moderate activity level, K-index 3 – not felt by most people.
  • august 28 (Thursday) – increased activity level – K-index 4 – possible negative sensations for weather-sensitive people.
  • august 29-31 (Friday-Sunday) – calm geomagnetic conditions with K-index within 3.

Note that the forecast may change, as solar activity researchers update their data every three hours. Therefore, scientists recommend keeping an eye out for updates and warnings.

Magnetic storms and their impact on people

Geomagnetic storms are categorized by their power level – K-index – from a reading of 2 to 9. The higher the K-index, the stronger the storm and its effects and impact on people and machinery.

For those who depend on weather changes, it is especially important to be careful these days and pay attention to your well-being.

How to reduce the negative impact of a magnetic storm

Magnetic storms do not pose a serious health threat to most people. However, some studies indicate that during strong magnetic storms, mild disorders such as headaches, dizziness, insomnia or deterioration of well-being in weather-sensitive people may occur.

Experts advise avoiding stress, getting more rest, maintaining water balance and minimizing physical activity.

To reduce the potential impact of magnetic storms, it is recommended to follow these tips:

  • avoid being outdoors excessively during the peak moments of the storm;
  • limit physical activity;
  • get plenty of rest;
  • drink plenty of fluids;
  • avoid stressful situations.

People with serious chronic illnesses should consult a physician for additional precautions during severe magnetic storms.

Drivers should be especially careful, as magnetic storms can affect concentration.
