The National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office have brought a case against the current head of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU) to court.

The official is accused of failing to declare a significant amount of real estate and a premium car, and his wife is accused of aiding and abetting illicit enrichment.

This was reported by the press service of the NABU, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the investigation, the head of the AMCU did not declare in his electronic declaration for 2024 20 real estate objects and a BMW X3 car, which were registered to his wife’s relatives.

According to detectives, the undeclared assets include:

  • 6 apartments in Kyiv and Uzhhorod;
  • a residential building near Kyiv with an area of more than 220 square meters
  • 2 land plots;
  • 2 garage boxes;
  • 6 parking spaces;
  • 3 non-residential premises with a total area of over 190 square meters;
  • a BMW X3 car.

The investigation believes that the official deliberately failed to include these data in the declaration to conceal the real amount of his family’s property.

What is known about the case

This is not the first episode involving the AMCU head. He was previously accused of illicit enrichment and submitting false information in his declarations for 2020-2023. That case is currently being considered in court.

The new episode covers the declaration period of 2024 and, according to representatives of the anti-corruption agencies, is a continuation of the systematic violation of financial control legislation.

What the NABU and the SAPO say

In a joint statement, the NABU and the SAPO said that the investigation is complete and the indictment has been sent to court. The prosecutor’s office emphasizes that it has evidence of the purchase of property for funds whose origin the official could not explain.

At the same time, according to open sources, the lawyers of the AMCU head are preparing to challenge the investigation, claiming that the proceedings are “politically motivated.”

The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine is a key body that monitors compliance with competition rules in the market. Its head belongs to the category of top officials whose declarations are subject to verification by the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NAPC).

Failure to declare property above the established thresholds is punishable under Article 366-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and illicit enrichment is punishable under Article 368-5.

What are the next steps?

The case will soon be considered by the High Anti-Corruption Court. If found guilty, the AMCU head may face imprisonment and a ban on holding public office for several years.
