Cyber specialists of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine have successfully attacked the Russian national payment system SBP (Rapid Payment System). Babel writes about this, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
This payment system is actively used to transfer funds to “charitable and volunteer organizations” in Russia that support the war against Ukraine.
The course of the attack
The attack targeted the infrastructure of SBP and its provider TransTeleCom.
As a result, thousands of Russians were unable to make instant transfers and online payments.
In Yekaterinburg, users complained en masse about the inability to pay for public transportation or pay at gas stations.
The cyberattack also paralyzed local providers, leaving hundreds of thousands of subscribers without internet and interactive TV.
Consequences
The economic losses from the DDoS attack are estimated at around $30 million.
Disruptions in the payment system and Internet services highlight the vulnerability of Russia’s critical infrastructure.
The purpose of the operation
According to GUR sources, the cyberattack was aimed at paralyzing financial flows that support Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In this way, Ukraine influenced the enemy’s financing mechanisms, restricting access to resources for “volunteer and charitable organizations” that help the Russian military.
This operation demonstrates the high level of Ukraine’s cyber capabilities.
It emphasizes that modern military conflicts cannot be imagined without digital operations and cybersecurity.
Cyberattacks can effectively affect the enemy’s economic and financial mechanisms, creating strategic advantages even without direct military intervention.
