Cyberattack on the X: Elon Musk blames Ukraine

11 March 2025 01:16

On Monday, March 10, users of the social network X faced massive failures in the platform’s operation. The owner of the company, Elon Musk, announced a large-scale cyberattack, hinting at the possible involvement of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Large-scale problems in X: what happened

According to Downdetector and Reuters, the disruptions were observed in different parts of the world. In particular, more than 26 thousand users in the United States and more than 10 thousand in the United Kingdom reported problems with access to the social network.

Ukrainian users also complained about the inability to access the platform through the website and mobile app.

Musk reports a cyberattack: who does he blame?

Elon Musk reported the attack on his X account.

“There was (and still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We are attacked every day, but this time a huge amount of resources were used. Either a large or coordinated group or a whole country is behind it. We are watching…” he wrote.

He did not specify what exactly he meant by “a large number of resources,” and his comments drew skepticism from cybersecurity experts, who pointed out that attacks of this nature – so-called “denial of service” – have been repeatedly carried out by small groups or individuals.

Later, in an interview with Fox News, Musk said that the attack could have been organized from the territory of Ukraine.

“We don’t know exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack aimed at destroying System X, with IP addresses originating from regions of Ukraine,” the billionaire said.

Reaction to Musk’s accusations

At the time of publication, there were no official comments from the Ukrainian authorities or cyber experts on Musk’s statements.

However, experts note that IP addresses can be faked, and their origin does not always indicate the real location of the attackers.

Experts said that most of the fraudulent traffic bombarding X can be traced to IP addresses in the United States, Vietnam, Brazil, and other countries, and that the amount of fraudulent traffic coming directly from Ukraine was “insignificant.”

Who is behind the attack on X

According to the Israeli company Check Point Research (CPR), the pro-Palestinian group Dark Storm Team is behind the attack on social network X. The targets of the hacker group’s attack are primarily organizations and websites in the United States, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel. This was reported to the editorial board of Newsweek magazine by CPR employees.

In recent months, the Dark Storm Team has attacked Los Angeles International Airport, the port of Haifa, and the UAE Ministry of Defense.

According to CPR, during February, servers of organizations in the United States were attacked on average 1,323 times a week, with media sites being the most frequent targets.
