The end of the era of “Armenian cognac”: now only brandy
7 November 2024 11:10
Producers of Armenian brandy will no longer label their drinks as “cognac”, as this name is a geographical indication protected by the EU. Instead, the designation “Armenian Brandy” will be registered. This was announced by the Minister of Economy of Armenia Gevorg Papoyan, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"
The minister said that the necessary actions are currently underway to smoothly and effectively stop using the “cognac” label by Armenian producers. At the same time, the European Union will even help Armenia in this difficult process.
Thus, the EU support program will start in two weeks. The EU will help in such areas as improving the laboratory infrastructure for quality control, developing a sustainable quality control system, creating a standardized inspection and licensing procedure, as well as overseeing the use of the new labeling and capacity building.

Papoyan emphasized a key component of the rebranding process: “Armenian Brandy” will be registered as a geographical indication with clear production and quality control criteria to be followed by all Armenian brandy producers.
Ukrainian retail chains and marketplaces, by the way, have almost completely switched to the new name and call Armenian brandy products. However, in some places, “illegal” names are still found.

Meanwhile, Turkey requires that donuts in Europe be made exclusively according to the Turkish recipe.
