Klitschko: Hundreds of thousands of residents are leaving Kyiv after Russian attacks

21 January 06:38

After massive Russian attacks on January 9, about 600,000 residents left Kyiv. This was reported by the British publication The Times, citing the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the mayor, the city found itself in an extremely difficult humanitarian situation due to strikes on energy infrastructure, which caused large-scale cuts in heat, water, and electricity.

Frozen water and thousands of homes without heat

The mayor of Kyiv stressed that 5,600 apartment buildings are currently without heating. In some of the apartments, the temperature is so low that the water in the toilets freezes, and people cannot use basic amenities.

“Not everyone has the opportunity to leave the city, but the population is currently decreasing,” Klitschko said.

He again called on Kyiv residents who have the opportunity to temporarily leave the capital to wait out the most severe period of cold weather and disruptions to basic services.

Russia is trying to create a humanitarian disaster

According to the mayor, Russian shelling has a clear goal — to provoke a humanitarian crisis in winter, leaving millions of people without heat and light.

“The situation with basic services — heating, water supply, electricity — is critical. The Russians want people to freeze,” he stressed.

After the night attack, hundreds of thousands of Kyiv residents were left without electricity, water, and heat. As of the evening, water supply had been restored, and work to restore heat is continuing as a priority.

What is happening now

City authorities and energy companies are working intensively, but the situation remains unstable. The authorities warn that power cuts may recur, and the process of fully restoring infrastructure depends on the security situation and the absence of new attacks.
