On this day, it is important to follow certain rules that have important spiritual and cultural significance. In particular, the following should not be done on Christmas Eve:
1. Break the rules of fasting
On Christmas Eve, you should strictly observe the fast. The Church emphasizes the need to refrain from meat, dairy products, and eggs. At the same time, it is allowed to eat fish and lean dishes. It is customary not to eat anything before dinner, which begins only after the first star appears in the sky.
2. Quarreling or swearing
On this day, it is important to maintain peace and harmony in the family. Christmas Eve should be a bright and joyful day, so it is strictly forbidden to quarrel, swear, or show other negative emotions. Violation of this tradition is considered a bad omen for the coming year.
3. Doing fortune telling
Although there were traditions of fortune-telling during the winter holidays, the church strongly condemns fortune-telling, especially on Christmas Eve. This day should be dedicated to spiritual purification, prayer, and preparation for Christmas.
4. Refuse to help
Mercy is given special importance on this day. If someone asks for help, you should not refuse on this day. It is believed that in this way a person brings a blessing into his or her life.
5. Doing needlework or cleaning
On this day, it is highly undesirable to clean and tidy up the house, as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day should be celebrated in cleanliness. So, before Christmas Eve, housewives complete all the preparations: they clean the house, prepare festive dishes, and decorate the house. However, when the first star appears in the sky, all work stops. The family must gather around the festive table, where a solemn and family atmosphere should prevail.
