Containment over the fourth unit: what exactly will be reinforced

The Cabinet of Ministers has allocated more than 1.6 billion hryvnia in budget funds for work to secure the Chernobyl nuclear power plant containment.

This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

This involves the construction of a new safe containment structure over the destroyed fourth power unit, which was damaged during the 1986 accident.

Consequences of the attacks

The ministry noted that part of the funds will be used to overcome the consequences of Russian attacks on nuclear infrastructure facilities.

Earlier, the Ukrainian side reported the detection of dozens of drones in the Chernobyl zone, as well as strikes on energy infrastructure that affected the operation of nuclear power plants.

Maintaining a safe state

Despite the war, Ukraine continues to work to maintain the safe condition of three Chernobyl power units, a spent nuclear fuel storage facility, and radioactive waste storage facilities.

Earlier, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate authorized the operation of SFA-1 until the end of 2034 after receiving the relevant safety justification.

Call for international response

The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the complete elimination of global risks is only possible if attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities cease.

The ministry called for a clear response from the international community, in particular raising the issue of restricting the rights of the aggressor state within the structure of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

A new safe confinement over the fourth unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was built with the participation of international partners as a long-term solution for isolating the destroyed reactor.
