The conflict between Iran and Israel awaits resolution: Trump undecided, Putin depressed

The conflict between Iran and Israel is awaiting resolution after a week of mutual missile attacks. The Israeli strikes killed the top of Iran’s military command and severely damaged the country’s nuclear facilities, killing hundreds of people. Iranian retaliatory attacks have killed two dozen Israeli civilians, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to Reuters, on Thursday morning, Tehran’s air defense systems intercepted drones on the outskirts of the capital. Iranian agencies also reported the arrest of 18 “enemy agents” who were manufacturing drones for Israeli attacks in the city of Mashhad in the northeast of the country.

According to Israeli authorities, since Friday, Iran has fired about 400 rockets at Israel, 40 of which penetrated the air defense system and killed 24 civilians. Iran reports at least 224 deaths from Israeli attacks, mostly among civilians.

Residents of Tehran are leaving the capital in panic. The city of ten million people is experiencing a massive outflow of population due to the threat of intensified Israeli air strikes.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that Tehran has violated its nuclear nonproliferation obligations for the first time in 20 years. Iran has traditionally denied developing nuclear weapons, claiming that its program is exclusively for peaceful purposes.

Diplomatic efforts continue: the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Britain are scheduled to hold talks with their Iranian counterpart in Geneva on Friday. The aim of the meeting is to try to bring Iran back to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the country is “moving step by step” toward eliminating threats from Iran’s nuclear facilities and ballistic missile arsenal. He thanked Trump for his support, noting that they are in constant contact.

Trump and Putin’s statements

US President Donald Trump has refrained from making clear statements about the United States’ possible participation in an operation against Iranian nuclear facilities.

“I may or may not do it. Nobody knows what I’m going to decide,”

– he told reporters outside the White House on Wednesday.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded to Trump’s calls for surrender in a televised address.

“The Iranian nation will not surrender,” he emphasized,

– he emphasized, warning that any American military intervention would have “irreparable consequences.”

Apart from the Iranian leadership itself, Russian leader Vladimir Putin seems to be the most depressed in this situation. When asked how he would react if the Supreme Leader of Iran were assassinated with the assistance of the United States, Vladimir Putin replied:

“I don’t even want to discuss this possibility. I don’t want to.”

Putin said that all parties should look for ways to end hostilities in a way that ensures both Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and Israel’s right to unconditional security of the Jewish state.
