Several countries in South and Southeast Asia have stepped up their purchases of Russian oil, which could lead to a situation where demand in the region exceeds supply from Russia.

This was reported by Reuters , citing sources in the energy market, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Demand for Russian oil is growing

This refers to active purchases or negotiations regarding supplies from the following countries:

  • Vietnam
  • Thailand
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia
  • Sri Lanka

According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, demand for alternative oil supply routes is currently high.

“Demand is high, especially for alternative routes. There may come a time when it becomes difficult to meet the additional demand,” he said.

The Philippines bought Russian oil for the first time in five years

According to sources, the Philippines purchased two tanker shipments of Russian oil totaling about 1.5 million barrels.

These are the first purchases in the last five years, indicating the country’s return to cooperation with Russian suppliers.

Thailand is in talks with Russia

Thailand is also considering the possibility of importing Russian oil.

Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the government has held talks with the Russian side regarding potential shipments.

Other countries in the region are also holding talks

Media in Sri Lanka are reporting on discussions regarding possible Russian oil supplies to the country.

Meanwhile, during a visit to Moscow, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked the Russian company Zarubezhneft to increase investments in Vietnam’s energy sector and ensure long-term oil supplies.

New buyers of Russian oil

Indonesia had previously announced its intention to purchase Russian oil as well.

Additionally, on March 13, the U.S. suspended sanctions on Russian oil that had already been loaded onto tankers, which partially eased supplies to the global market.
