Free loans and prohibition of discrimination: Rada adopts law on social protection of servicemen

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed Bill No. 10313, which strengthens social protection for military and police officers. The document was supported by 296 MPs, Komersant ukrainskyi

Among other things, the law provides for the following innovations:
- a five-day working week is officially established for military personnel;
- the period of treatment for servicemen can last up to 12 months, including abroad, without the need to undergo a preliminary medical examination every 4 months;
- servicemen have the right to a one-time leave for the birth of a child with pay;
- the law stipulates that the amount of a one-time financial assistance in case of death in service cannot be less than UAH 15 million;
- it is prohibited to discriminate against servicemen on the basis of gender; sexual harassment is prohibited;
- servicemen have all the rights to freedom of speech in social networks and the media, but the information published should not give away military secrets;
- servicemen are exempt from paying interest on loans, as well as fines and penalties for failure to fulfil obligations to institutions of all forms of ownership;
- a serviceman may receive a leave of absence for up to 14 days to care for a sick child under 14 years of age;
- priests of the UOC-MP cannot be military chaplains.
The law is awaiting the president’s signature and will come into force the day after its publication.
