“Blood Moon in September: when and where to watch the unique eclipse

4 September 06:02

On the night of September 8, a total lunar eclipse will take place over Ukraine. The moon will be completely immersed in the Earth’s shadow and will turn red. The total eclipse, known as the “Blood Moon,” will last 3 hours, 29 minutes and 24 seconds, according to IFLScience, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

This phenomenon occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up and our planet casts a shadow on the satellite, coloring it in rich red and copper hues.

If the eclipse coincides with a supermoon – the moment when the Moon is closest to the Earth and looks bigger and brighter – the spectacle becomes even more impressive and rare.

Astronomers emphasize that such events are rare, so they are monitored and predicted in advance.

Will the eclipse be visible in Ukraine?

The possibility of observation depends on the geographical location and weather conditions. If the sky is clear, Ukrainians will be able to see this natural wonder with the naked eye, without telescopes or special optics.

The phase of the total eclipse will begin in the dead of night, and it is then that the Moon will acquire its characteristic “blood” hue.

Astronomers estimate that more than 7 billion people will be able to see this event – up to 60% of the world’s population will be able to watch the total eclipse, and together with partial phases, the number of viewers may increase to 87% of the world’s population, if no other factors interfere. This makes the event a record-breaking one in terms of coverage.

The total eclipse will be visible from most of Asia, parts of East Africa and Western Australia. Much of Europe, the rest of Africa, Australia, and the east coast of Brazil will see at least partial phases of the event. The exact time of the eclipse for each region can be checked on the specialized website Time&Date.com.

It is known that in Ukraine, particularly in Kyiv, almost all phases of the Blood Moon will be visible, except for the first two. The total eclipse will begin at 20:30, and the last phase, i.e. the penumbral eclipse, will end at 23:55 Kyiv time.
