Kyiv-Mohyla Academy intends to become energy independent

The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy has launched an energy independence project, thanks to which most of the buildings will have their own power supply. This was reported by the educational institution, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The goal of this project is to ensure the continuity of the educational process, as well as the stable functioning of all university departments, even in the face of power outages. In total, by the end of spring 2025, it is planned to ensure the energy independence of 75% of the Academy’s buildings.
The first to support Mohyla Academy’s initiative were Naftogaz Group, a leading oil and gas company, Ukrnafta, and Kyiv Mohyla Business School.
The project envisages the installation of alternative sources of electricity: a hybrid solar power plant with solar panels, batteries, and backup power generators. During the first stage, the second campus is planned to be powered.
The first stage is scheduled for completion in early February 2025. After all the technical work on connecting the equipment is completed, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy will be able to create the necessary conditions for uninterrupted power supply and ensure a full educational process during large-scale power outages.
Being energy independent is profitable and… fashionable
The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is not the first educational institution to become energy independent. For example, an entire solar power plant with a storage system to provide autonomous power is operating on the roof of the Scientific and Technical Library of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

A megawatt power plant has recently appeared on the roof of the Kyiv Innovation Terminal of Nova Poshta. The field of solar panels there stretches over an area of 5000 square meters.
The OKKO chain is actively installing solar panels at its gas stations. The first rooftop solar power plant was installed at a gas station in the Obolon district of Kyiv by Ukrnafta.
Last summer, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine decided to make it mandatory to install solar panels with energy storage systems on all public buildings by the end of 2025.
