For the second year in a row, Kyiv has been ranked among the last ten worst cities to live in. The reason for this is the war, which has kept the stability of the Ukrainian capital low. This is stated in The Economist magazine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The rating included 173 of the world’s largest cities.
The journalists note that a subsidiary of the EIU has developed a special formula for assessing the livability of a city. The annual study evaluates 173 settlements in five categories:
- stability
- healthcare
- culture and environment;
- education
- infrastructure.
For the second year in a row, Kyiv is among the ten worst cities, ranking 165th out of 173.
According to the magazine’s ranking, Kyiv is preceded by Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. It is followed by Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea), Harare (Zimbabwe), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Karachi (Pakistan), Lagos (Nigeria), Algeria, and Tripoli (Libya). Damascus is at the bottom of the ranking.

The Syrian capital has remained the least liveable city in the index since 2013, scoring only 30.7 in 2024. Its stability score is 20. The city shares the result with Karachi (Pakistan).
“Kyiv also shows poor results in this category, falling into the top ten outsider cities of the index for the second year in a row,” the article says.

For the third year in a row, Vienna has been ranked first in the ranking of the best cities to live in. The Austrian capital received perfect scores in four of the five index categories, but the lack of major sporting events contributed to its lower score of 93.5 out of 100 in the culture and environment category.
Three other European cities – Copenhagen, Zurich and Geneva – also made the top five. All of them have small populations, which usually leads to lower crime rates and less congested roads and public transport systems.
